Events and festivals!!!

Halkidiki is a place where many cultural events take place all year round.
The most famous events are during the summer period and especially between July and August.

In the traditional village of Olympiada you have the chance to celebrate together with fishmen the clam festival at the beginning of July. Moreover, in the village of Nea Moudania, at the end of July is the sardine festival, with folklore events and lots of fun.

Some traditional events are the Prophet Helias celebration (20th of July). In many villages, like Ierissos, Vavdos, Polygyros and Petralona, are celebrating “ta kazania tou Ai-Ilia” (the caldrons of Prophet Helias) with free food and wine.
Another traditional event is on 26-27th of July (Agia Paraskevi – Panteleimonas celebration). Religious feast in Arnaia and folklore festival with several events, textile exhibition and other forms of folklore art. Traditional festivals in the church of Agia Paraskevi in Kassandra, in Agios Nikolaos, Galatista, Neos Marmaras (Partheniona), Nikiti, Nea Triglia, Kallithea and Kryopigi.

Also the last Sunday of July is taking place the cross swimming in Toronaios (24km) from Kallithea to Nikiti. Free swimming athletic event with great attention of swimmers. Also, folklore dance in the beach of Nikiti at night.

At last, we should not forget to mention the mushroom festival in September. It is in the mountainous Taxiarchi with the so-called mushroom pies, as well as the olive festival in Olynthos, the festival of Prophet Helias (20 July) and the great festival of Agios (Saint) Mamas every September, not to mention all the cultural events that take place in Afytos throughout summer.

The Train is back!

Pelion's TrainThe train is back! I read with great pleasure that the old train connecting Volos with Milies (a well known village of Pelion Mountain) is ready to start operating again! The train is 106 years old and has been implemented by the engineer Evaristo De Kiriko, father of the famous painter Gorgio De Kiriko. The train was constantly operating till 1971. The train was used for transporting products from Volos to Pelion and vice verca. This year the train strats its trips from 11th of April and from 1991 is used only for touristic purposes. The trip is about 40 minutes and passegengers will view one of the most beautifull parts of Pelion.

The local name of the train is: Μουντζούρης meaning roughly in English "grease monkey".
For those of you loving technicalities, Mountzouris travels over rails of 60cms and is the only train of that sort in Greece. Mountzouris has its brother in Belgium where both trains work over the same sort of rails!
