Elections

Dear All,

After loooong time we are here again and ready to blog! I hope that you had a nice summer, despite that this summer for many reasons was different and unique. Anyway.

I do not know how many of you aware that Greece is running an election period as many other European countries. I will post for you the main political parties by mentioning further that these parliament elections have an urgent profile. Consider that the last elections were 2 years ago. The prime minister Mr. Karamanlis announced that such elections were needed for the reason of the financial problems that the country faces due to the global financial crisis.

The main political parties are:

* New Democracy: The party in the goverment now and its leader is Costas Karamanlis. Their page is: New Democracy (Nea Dimokratia). New Democracy expresses middle-right ideas and has some past roots with the extreme right.

*PA.SO.K: Pasok is quite well known in Europe due to its founder, Andreas Papandreou and his actions over 70s and 80s. The party's web link is: PASOK and their english version is: PASOK. Fairly suprisingly their english page is quite poor and out dated. At this moment PASOK is leading galops before the elections. Today's leader of PASOK, is the son of Andreas Papanderou: George Papandreou. Apparently, Pasok expresses the socialist middle.

* K.K.E: The communist party in Greece. KKE has a long history and for many years till late 70s was illegal. In the last elections was the third party in the parliament and its votes seems to be quite constant. The website of the party is: KKE and is leadered by Aleka Papariga.

* SYRIZA: a coallition of left parties. The main party in this coallition is the party of SYNASPISMOS that means coallition. A party expressing radical socialist opinions and we could say that is the party that the young people vote. Its leadered by Alexis Tsipras, a young politician.

Other two parties, is LAOS leadered by an ex member of the New Democracy. LAOS recently is very popular among the right wing voters and is very likely to be the fourth party in terms of its power in the new parliament. The last party is the Green Party, belonging to the wider movement of Green around Europe.

I forgot to say that the elections are on 4th of October. I know that many of you are not interested about politics but I thought due to the recent financial crisis to be updated about the politics in Greece.
