A different story...

This time we change a subject and we write a interesting story from Argentina.
Leandro Vesco, a very active Argentinian real estate agent and novelistwrote a novel about the water springs of Carhue village in Argentina. The writer wrote only the begining....the end was written by the village residents.

Everything started five years ago, when Leandro Vesco visited the Carhue village for the first time. The village is located 520km away from Buenos Aires and it is familiar for its thermal springs.

Vesco had already written many stories, which he was telling them only in artistic haunts, and none of them had ever been published. At the end of his stay in Carhue, he contrives a myth about a mysterious water spring of Soda. The water causes amnesia to whoever drinks it and starts the wrtiting of a novel. The characters are real residents of that village, but change their name and their job for their protection.

The novel cronicles the history of Carhue springs in our days, in about 500 pages. The story structures around the mysterious Soda's water spring of lake Epecuen, where Juan Calfulcura's army has gone to heal General Levalle. Nevertheless, the writer leaves the story unfinished.

The time that Vesco completes the first part of his book, he uploads some chapters of Facebook, www.facebook.com/novela.carhue. The second part of his book, it will be written by itself.

So, several Carhue residents, who knew them little, brought new ideas for the novel and they bacame more active characters. Wahtever age, the majority of the residents had an active participation in book's writting.

Other residents, used the Facebook page as a notice board, where the posted poems, notes, even researchning points of view about stray animals.

Until today, more than 1.200 people have visited the specific web page. An impressive number considering that only 1.000 residents of the village are connected with Internet.

Let's hope that we will witness something similar regarding Halkidiki and some of its villages!

Elections

Dear All,

After loooong time we are here again and ready to blog! I hope that you had a nice summer, despite that this summer for many reasons was different and unique. Anyway.

I do not know how many of you aware that Greece is running an election period as many other European countries. I will post for you the main political parties by mentioning further that these parliament elections have an urgent profile. Consider that the last elections were 2 years ago. The prime minister Mr. Karamanlis announced that such elections were needed for the reason of the financial problems that the country faces due to the global financial crisis.

The main political parties are:

* New Democracy: The party in the goverment now and its leader is Costas Karamanlis. Their page is: New Democracy (Nea Dimokratia). New Democracy expresses middle-right ideas and has some past roots with the extreme right.

*PA.SO.K: Pasok is quite well known in Europe due to its founder, Andreas Papandreou and his actions over 70s and 80s. The party's web link is: PASOK and their english version is: PASOK. Fairly suprisingly their english page is quite poor and out dated. At this moment PASOK is leading galops before the elections. Today's leader of PASOK, is the son of Andreas Papanderou: George Papandreou. Apparently, Pasok expresses the socialist middle.

* K.K.E: The communist party in Greece. KKE has a long history and for many years till late 70s was illegal. In the last elections was the third party in the parliament and its votes seems to be quite constant. The website of the party is: KKE and is leadered by Aleka Papariga.

* SYRIZA: a coallition of left parties. The main party in this coallition is the party of SYNASPISMOS that means coallition. A party expressing radical socialist opinions and we could say that is the party that the young people vote. Its leadered by Alexis Tsipras, a young politician.

Other two parties, is LAOS leadered by an ex member of the New Democracy. LAOS recently is very popular among the right wing voters and is very likely to be the fourth party in terms of its power in the new parliament. The last party is the Green Party, belonging to the wider movement of Green around Europe.

I forgot to say that the elections are on 4th of October. I know that many of you are not interested about politics but I thought due to the recent financial crisis to be updated about the politics in Greece. In the meantime if you are looking for a house in Greece, please check this website out: Properties in Greece.

Listening to the Radio!

Imagine that you are travelling in the green forests of Halkidiki, or you are resting in a hotel in Halkidiki, with magnificent sea view!
What could be better than being accompanied these moments with music!

An easy solution to this is of course radio! Always and almost everywhere someone has the possibility to listen radio, either in the car or in a hotel or home. This fact provides also the opportunity for someone to become familiar with the local stations and the local music and learn better about the local culture of an area.

To begin with, some familiar radio stations are:

1. Radio Thessaloniki at 95,4 Hz
2. Antenna Radio at 97,5 Hz
3. Kanali 98fm Stereo
4. Top fm 104fm Stereo
5. Radio Delta at 98,6
6. and Radio Energy

An online listing of these radio stations can be found here:

Greek Radio Live and Greek e-radio

Halkidiki is a place where many cultural events take place all year round.
The most famous events are during the summer period and especially between July and August.

In the traditional village of Olympiada you have the chance to celebrate together with fishmen the clam festival at the beginning of July. Moreover, in the village of Nea Moudania, at the end of July is the sardine festival, with folklore events and lots of fun.

Some traditional events are the Prophet Helias celebration (20th of July). In many villages, like Ierissos, Vavdos, Polygyros and Petralona, are celebrating “ta kazania tou Ai-Ilia” (the caldrons of Prophet Helias) with free food and wine.
Another traditional event is on 26-27th of July (Agia Paraskevi – Panteleimonas celebration). Religious feast in Arnaia and folklore festival with several events, textile exhibition and other forms of folklore art. Traditional festivals in the church of Agia Paraskevi in Kassandra, in Agios Nikolaos, Galatista, Neos Marmaras (Partheniona), Nikiti, Nea Triglia, Kallithea and Kryopigi.

Also the last Sunday of July is taking place the cross swimming in Toronaios (24km) from Kallithea to Nikiti. Free swimming athletic event with great attention of swimmers. Also, folklore dance in the beach of Nikiti at night.

At last, we should not forget to mention the mushroom festival in September. It is in the mountainous Taxiarchi with the so-called mushroom pies, as well as the olive festival in Olynthos, the festival of Prophet Helias (20 July) and the great festival of Agios (Saint) Mamas every September, not to mention all the cultural events that take place in Afytos throughout summer.

The Train is back!

Pelion's TrainThe train is back! I read with great pleasure that the old train connecting Volos with Milies (a well known village of Pelion Mountain) is ready to start operating again! The train is 106 years old and has been implemented by the engineer Evaristo De Kiriko, father of the famous painter Gorgio De Kiriko. The train was constantly operating till 1971. The train was used for transporting products from Volos to Pelion and vice verca. This year the train strats its trips from 11th of April and from 1991 is used only for touristic purposes. The trip is about 40 minutes and passegengers will view one of the most beautifull parts of Pelion.

The local name of the train is: Μουντζούρης meaning roughly in English "grease monkey".
For those of you loving technicalities, Mountzouris travels over rails of 60cms and is the only train of that sort in Greece. Mountzouris has its brother in Belgium where both trains work over the same sort of rails!

Some links that you could seek more information about Volos and Pelion are:
